On the first day of December The Ickworth’s doors open to reveal its magical festive transformation. Guests are welcomed by our team in the lobby which is filled by a wonderfully decorated Christmas tree festooned in baubles, bows and twinkling lights.
The yuletide nostalgia continues into our corridors, lounges and dining rooms with each one beautifully decorated to delight our guests and create magical festive memories for our little visitors. Let's hope for a dusting of snow!
Staying with us for a pre-Christmas break or for Christmas and New Year is truly special
With spending so much time together as a family over the last couple of years it’s reminded us how important it is, and there’s no better time to be together than during the season of festive cheer. At The Ickworth we’re here to take care of you and help take the pressure off so you can forget about the Christmas/New Year preparations and daily routines; all you need to do is relax and enjoy yourselves. Don’t forget to bring your pooch, it wouldn’t be the same at this time of the year without the whole family!
If you need baby or toddler equipment for during your stay, let us know in advance and we’ll arrange for it to be in your bedroom, including cots, bed guards, potty, nappy bins and bottle warmers. We think of everything so you don’t have to. All you need to do is pack the bare necessities and we’ll do the rest!
The beautiful surroundings of this unique stately home with original features, fabulous artwork and sumptuous furnishings, combined with the great outdoors sets the scene.
There’s plenty of family activities to suit everyone and right on the doorstep. There are many paths to explore on the 1,800 acre National Trust estate including an all-weather 9.4km (six-mile) trail, it’s split into sections so you don’t have to do the full distance! The estate is ideal for walks to blow away the cobwebs and bikes are also on hand for those who wish to explore further afield. We have all sizes available to hire, and there are child seats and stabilisers if you need them.
It’s worth braving the cold and embracing the chilly wintry air. Wrap-up warm with hats, scarfs and ear muffs and enjoy beautiful frosty scenes whilst keeping an eye out for wildlife on the estate. All the time knowing that at the end of the walk you can relax in the lounges on plump sofas nestled near to the roaring fires, with views through the tall windows to the Italianate Gardens. Your hands will be wrapped around a hot chocolate, or why not enjoy a glass of fizz – it is your holiday!
When it gets too cold or dark to be outside there’s lots to do indoors. Our indoor swimming pool is beautifully warm and you’re welcome to borrow the floats and noodles. Babies and children up to 8 years old will love our Ofsted-registered Four Bears' Den, where they can play, explore and get creative under the supervision of our brilliant crèche team. There are three daily sessions, and on Wednesday and Sunday mornings there’s also the Children’s Breakfast Club for 18months+ allowing parents to snuggle back under the duvet for some extra and well-deserved sleep. Not to mention a family board game or two, it’s not Christmas without them, just ask one of the team as we have plenty for you to borrow.
The games room with table football and games consoles will keep the older children amused and when the day draws to an end there’s a film showing every day at 6pm in the Cinema Room. While the children are entertained you can luxuriate in our Treatment Rooms with ELEMIS pampering treats, perfectly relaxing your mind and body.
If you stay with us from 11th to 22nd December you can enjoy the ’12 days of Christmas’ display in the National Trust house. Enjoy the sights and smells of Christmas and see some of the rooms set as if for use by the 4th Marquess and Marchioness of Bristol and their family in the early 1930’s. With presents being wrapped, the table will be laid with festive treats, candles will be twinkling and carols will be playing on the wireless. Guests of the hotel have free access to the National Trust house, just ask at Reception for a pass.
A relaxing and enjoyable dinner-time is really important which is why we make mealtimes easy and convenient with menus geared-up for children, served from 5pm each evening. Alternatively, your children are welcome to enjoy High Tea, between 5pm to 6pm, and when they are safely tucked up in bed (if you are staying in the hotel, switch on the baby listening system, or we can organise a babysitter if you are staying in The Lodge) enjoy a sophisticated, adults-only dinner in Frederick’s restaurant!
During Christmas and New Year we offer packages which include lots of organised activities for children and families, as well as leaving time to spend some special moments together. The whole family will feel relaxed, entertained and very looked after, and for that reason it’s a very different Christmas and New year in contrast to hosting a gathering at home!
