There are few hotels that truly cater for the entire family (including your tail wagger), but at the child-friendly, dog-friendly Ickworth you don’t need to get back in the car until it’s time to go home. Everything is right on the doorstep, from outdoors adventures (don’t miss our new Micro Scooters) to relaxing beauty treatments and culinary delights, all set in and around the iconic stately home.
We’ve got it covered
Sometimes family holidays and breaks can feel like an effort, but we’ve thought of everything so you don’t need to. From bed guards, changing mats and cots to Sunday lie-ins for parents – just ask and we’ll sort it!
Outdoor fun at The Ickworth
You’ll probably find that even at check-in your children have left your side to explore, so they’ll be right at home and know where everything is before you do!
Whether you use one of the bikes from the bike sheds or go on foot, explore the paths and trails on the 1,800-acre National Trust estate where we are situated, through ancient woodland, fields and parkland. We challenge you to find the obelisk and the ice house (the estate is steeped in history). There are also animals, bugs and birds in abundance. Spot a deer and if you stay in spring see the new lambs bouncing about.
Or stay closer to home and visit the walled garden and beautifully restored church on our fabulous new Micro Scooters for adults and children – fab family fun! Find the chickens, keep an eye out for the flora and fauna and lie back in the big grassy dips and look up at the sky. The sense of space on the estate is breath-taking.
As guests of the Hotel, you and your family can enjoy free entry to the National Trust’s Ickworth House, park and gardens. Their adventure play area keeps kids entertained for hours, as does den building in the woods and the stumpery in the Italianate garden. The exhibition in the basement on ‘life beneath the stairs’ is fascinating and engaging. This year also sees a unique exhibition to celebrate the centenary of (some) women winning the right to vote by honouring Theodora, 4th Marchioness of Bristol.
You’ll also find trampolines, a football pitch, a tennis court and a toddler play area outside. We can pack you a picnic lunch in a rucksack so you can stay out as long as you fancy. Why not include a bottle of wine for a relaxing glass (or two) by the lake taking in the views?! Or have a delicious lunch in the Conservatory.
Indoor fun at The Ickworth
As well as the swimming pool by the bike shed, indoors you’ll find a toy box and lots of games to borrow at Reception, a games room, plenty of DVDs to borrow and the fabulous Four Bears Den. For every night stayed, kids get two hours free in the crèche, leaving you some valuable ‘me’ time. Why not book a beauty treatment or relax in the Drawing Room with a book and a cup of coffee or a glass of Prosecco? You’re on holiday after all!
Speaking of which, the Sunday morning lie-in is the ultimate parents’ treat, with children collected from rooms to enjoy breakfast and fun with the Den team from 8am to 10am.
Family-friendly dining at The Ickworth
Children love High Tea at 5pm, followed by a film to wind down after a busy day. Or enjoy family dining in the Conservatory from 6pm. Beforehand, try some of our mocktails and cocktails – children relish this grown-up experience.
Alternatively, when they’re tucked up in bed, switch on the baby-listening in your bedroom (not available in The Lodge) or ask us to arrange a babysitter, and enjoy a truly adult evening just like it used to be, with drinks in the Drawing Room followed by a three-course candle-lit dinner in Frederick’s restaurant.
Delicious food is at the heart of what we do. Our head chef, who has AA Two Rosettes, has great enthusiasm for sourcing local ingredients to ensure his dishes are bursting with flavour. We were recently recognised for our outstanding offering when we won the Food and Drink award in the Norfolk & Suffolk Tourism Awards.
